Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Vehicles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a statement.

Law enforcement say they were notified late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.

The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.

Officers then found numerous other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement report initial examinations indicate the substance was most likely human blood.

"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; authorities are presently not informed of any harm in connection with the event," they stated.

Local authorities announced they were attempting "to solve the case" and have requested to the residents for tips.

A senior representative commented the incident made him without words and had to be solved quickly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
